Magok Cultural Hall

Situated within Seoul Botanic Park, the Magok Cultural Hall was registered as the “Drainage Pumping Station of the Former Yangcheon Irrigation Association, Seoul,” Registered Cultural Heritage No. 363 in 2007. Constructed during the Japanese colonial period between 1927 and 1928, the “Drainage Pumping Station of the Former Yangcheon Irrigation Association, Seoul (Magok Cultural Hall)” is the only surviving structure among Korea's modern industrial cultural heritage whose original form remains, giving it significant conservation value.
This drainage pump station once played a role in managing the water of the Magok-area plains to ensure stable rice farming. The pump station was built with a wooden structure on top of a 4-meter concrete structure to maintain its function even during major floods. It was decommissioned in the 1980s due to urbanization, undergoing reinforcement and restoration beginning in 2017 to restore its former appearance and structure.
Following restoration, the Magok Cultural Hall is composed of a Special Exhibition Room (327.94 ㎡) on the first floor, a Permanent Exhibition Room (57.16 ㎡) on the second floor, and an underground space that reveals the drainage pump pipes.
